Malaysia is a country best discovered through its food.
Every destination has a flavour. Every dish has a story. And behind every recipe are generations of people, traditions, ingredients and cultures that have shaped Malaysia into one of Asia's most diverse culinary destinations.
From the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur and the heritage quarters of George Town and Melaka to the fishing communities of the East Coast, the highlands of Sabah and the diverse culinary traditions of Sarawak, travelling across Malaysia offers a different food experience at every stop.
Welcome to Food Tourism Malaysia by MFHI — where every journey begins with a taste.
Food tourism is more than travelling somewhere just to eat. It is about discovering a destination through its food, people, culture, history and way of life.
A bowl of laksa can tell the story of where it came from. A traditional kuih can carry a recipe passed down through generations.
A morning market can introduce travellers to ingredients they have never encountered before. A meal prepared by a local community can provide a deeper understanding of the people and culture of a destination.
This is the experience MFHI wants travellers to discover. Through Food Tourism Malaysia, MFHI connects food with destinations to create journeys that allow visitors to taste Malaysia, meet Malaysia and experience Malaysia.
One Country. Many Cultures. Endless Flavours.
Malaysia's culinary landscape has been shaped by centuries of cultural exchange, migration, trade and local traditions.
Malay, Chinese, Indian, Peranakan, indigenous communities of Sabah and Sarawak and many other communities have contributed ingredients, techniques and traditions to Malaysia's food culture. The result is something uniquely Malaysian.
Travellers can start the morning with nasi lemak or roti canai, enjoy banana leaf rice or nasi kandar for lunch, stop for cendol and traditional kuih, discover regional dishes in the evening and end the night over satay and teh tarik.
And the next destination can offer an entirely different experience. That diversity is what makes Malaysia special.
There are hundreds of dishes to discover across Malaysia, but some flavours have become synonymous with the Malaysian experience.

Fragrant rice cooked with coconut milk and pandan, traditionally served with sambal, anchovies, peanuts, cucumber and egg. Today, nasi lemak can be found in countless variations throughout the country.

Marinated meat grilled over charcoal and traditionally enjoyed with peanut sauce, cucumber, onion and rice cakes. The smoky aroma of satay grilling is a familiar sight at markets and food stalls throughout Malaysia.

A rich, aromatic dish slowly cooked with spices, herbs and coconut milk. Different states and communities have developed their own rendang traditions and recipes.

One name, many Malaysian identities. From Penang Assam Laksa and Johor Laksa to Sarawak Laksa and northern varieties, travelling through Malaysia reveals how dramatically one dish can change from one region to another.

Crispy on the outside and soft within, roti canai is one of Malaysia's favourite breakfast and supper foods, commonly enjoyed with dhal or curry.

A Malaysian favourite associated especially with Penang — rice accompanied by a selection of curries, meats, seafood and vegetables, often finished with a mixture of different curry gravies.

Flat rice noodles stir-fried over intense heat with a combination of ingredients that create the smoky flavour associated with one of Malaysia's best-known street foods.

Distinctive blue-tinted rice accompanied by herbs, vegetables, sambal and various side dishes — a colourful representation of East Coast Malaysian cuisine.

More than just tea. The famous pulled tea is part of Malaysia's everyday social culture and can be enjoyed from breakfast until late at night.

Colourful, delicate and diverse, Malaysian traditional kuih reflect local ingredients and generations of culinary knowledge — from coconut milk and palm sugar to pandan, glutinous rice and tropical produce.
One of the most exciting aspects of Malaysian food tourism is discovering how food changes as you travel across the country.

Explore the culinary traditions of Penang, Kedah and Perlis, from nasi kandar, char kway teow and laksa to regional rice dishes, traditional desserts and local market culture.

Discover Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang through dishes such as nasi kerabu, nasi dagang, keropok lekor, traditional kuih and recipes shaped by coastal communities and local ingredients.

Experience the extraordinary diversity of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, where traditional food, street food, modern Malaysian cuisine and cultures from across the country meet in one destination.

Travel through Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor to discover distinctive culinary identities — from Negeri Sembilan's rich and spicy masak lemak traditions and Melaka's Peranakan heritage to Johor's unique laksa and regional specialties.

Discover ingredients, seafood, markets and culinary traditions influenced by Sabah's diverse indigenous communities and natural landscape.

Experience a completely different side of Malaysian cuisine through Sarawak Laksa, local produce, traditional Dayak culinary traditions, seafood, kek lapis and the many flavours found throughout the state.

Malaysia Eats All Day
In Malaysia, food does not follow a simple breakfast-lunch-dinner schedule.
Food is not simply something Malaysians consume. It is how we gather, celebrate, welcome guests and spend time together.
One Journey. Different Flavours of Malaysia.
To make Malaysian food tourism easier to experience, MFHI introduces the Taste Malaysia Series — curated journeys combining food, culture, heritage, attractions and local experiences.
Each journey is designed around a destination and its unique identity. Travellers will not simply visit a place: they will experience its food, meet its people, understand its heritage and discover the stories that make each destination different.
